Hull Identification Number (HIN) / Boat VIN

What's a HIN (boat VIN) and where do I find it?

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) serves as the unique identifier for a boat, akin to the VIN or vehicle serial number for a car. If the dealer or broker listing the boat has not provided you with a report from Boat Inspection Report®, request the boat’s HIN from them so you can conduct your own assessment.

The HIN is typically affixed or stamped into the back of the boat’s hull, commonly referred to as the transom, usually in the uppermost right corner or beneath the swim platform. Additionally, the HIN may be documented on the state title, state registration, USCG Documentation, and insurance paperwork. For boats manufactured in 1984 or later, Federal regulations dictate that the HIN must adhere to the format illustrated in the image below.
